Learning Outcomes and Application This unit of competency involves the skills and knowledge required to apply safe work practices when operating in or around aircraft at an airbase. It includes working safely near aircraft and facilitating safe ground support and it applies to personnel working in the public safety sector who work around aircraft.The fire sector is those sections of government departments, statutory authorities or organisations that have responsibility under jurisdictional arrangements for the delivery of firefighting and fire management services.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.
Duration and Setting X weeks, nominally xx hours, delivered in a classroom/online/blended learning setting.

Elements of Competency Performance Criteria              
Element: Work safely in and around aircraft
  • Personal protective clothing and equipment is used, in accordance with operational procedures
       
Element: Precautions and clearances are obtained and followed when operating on or near aircraft movement areas
       
Element: Any approach to an operating aircraft is made, in accordance with organisational aircraft approach procedures, from an angle visible to the pilot or flight crew and with approval of the pilot or flight crew
       
Element: Adequate clearance is maintained from propellers, rotors and/or turbine engines, exhaust gases and engine intakes
       
Element: Typical manoeuvring patterns of aircraft are anticipated through activities
       
Element: Instructions or signals from pilots or staff controlling aircraft are complied with, in accordance with organisational procedures
       
Element: Site hazards are identified and risks are assessed and control measures are implemented
       
Element: Facilitate safe ground support
  • Appropriate precautions are observed when positioning vehicles or equipment close to aircraft
       
Element: Aircraft design features are taken into account whilst boarding, loading or handling aircraft
       
Element: Instructions from pilots and staff coordinating aircraft operations, organisational procedures and placards are followed during ground support operations
       
Element: Aircraft loading is conducted under pilot or flight crew member supervision and appropriate weight, balance and loading system are complied with
       
Element: Areas are designated and separated, in accordance with site features and specific operations being conducted
       
Element: Fitting of equipment to an aircraft is conducted under pilot supervision, in accordance with appropriate regulatory approvals
       
Element: Aircraft fuels, oils, and supplies are stored and handled, in accordance with regulatory requirements and organisational procedures
       
Element: Aircraft or equipment defects or hazards are reported to pilot and/or appropriate supervisor
       
Element: Appropriate aerodrome regulations are complied with
